首届虚苑国际版画双年展巡回 | 济南市美术馆

 首届虚苑国际版画双年展巡回展览第一站在济南市美术馆开展。此次展览展出作品来自双年展终评遴选出的88位艺术家。双年展历时半年,收到了来自50余个国家和地区的1169位艺术家的近5000件作品投稿,经过严格的流程,以及评委们详细、激烈的讨论,最终由波兰艺术家Kamil Kocurek获得特等奖,比利时艺术家Wesel Thierry获得版画中心驻留创作奖。本次展览,集结了世界各地版画的前沿精粹之作,给观众带来一场兼具气势、深度、细节的视觉盛宴。

策展人寄语(节选)

版画脱胎于“复制”。不论是现存最早的纸质印刷、中国唐代敦煌《金刚经》卷首的如来和菩萨群像,北宋初年寺僧参与书写、绘画、雕版的佛像单页,还是十五世纪兴起于意大利和德国的古典文学和宗教插图,版画均诞生于艺术家广泛传播原创图像与受众便捷阅读、携带时代思想的双向需求。历史上,以木版、铜版、石版等材质为媒介,版画不仅将原先局限于小范围观者的艺术品位延申至多样的群体中,也令艺术家挣脱了原有的订购模式,获得更宽阔的表达自由。

版画基于工具,植根于阅读。画稿需要通过艺术家对版材的亲手实验、加工、印制,才能变成一套成品;版画的欣赏也常常伴随着求知的过程。在不同文明各自的探索中,它跃出复制品的范畴,衍生发展出了独具肌理美感和内向思索的表达方式。版画将艺术家和其他两个身份天然有力地联系起来:思想者与匠人。

艺术家与材料深刻交流时犹如专注的匠人,而材质在画面上的游戏、对话、嬗变中埋藏着现代性。包括特等奖得主KamilKocurek在内的许多艺术家十分年轻,他们将质感与思想融为一体的能力展现了过人的禀赋与深度。

Prints originated in duplicating. The earliest prints include the album page from the Diamond Sutra with the group portraits of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas in the ninth century, Dunhuang; the inscribed devotional sheets of Maitreya and attendants modularly produced by monks in the early Northern Song; and the illustrations of classic literature and religious canons that emerged in Italy and Germany in the fifteenth century. They were created to suit the rising demands on disseminating the latest imageries from artists, and on receiving the contemporary thoughts and aesthetic fashions from the audience. With the medium of woodblocks, copper plates and stone plates etc., printmaking engaged the content of fine arts with a wider population, and freed many painters and sculptors from the acquisition practices dominated by the aristocrats so that they enjoyed more flexibility in the expressions.

The creation of prints is based on the manual process, and the reception is rooted in reading. The original drawing turns into prints only after the artist experiments with the materials and then carve, etch, needle, paint on or employ more contemporary methods to transform the medium with hands.The appreciation of prints often involves intellectual curiosity. Explored by different civilizations, printmaking went beyond replications, and showed enormous potential in presenting the beautiful texture of different materials. The requirement on artists to think thoroughly before making and control the procedures leads to a tendency of introverted, self-contained reflection. Printmaking connects artists to two other identities: thinkers and craftsmen.

In printmaking, artists communicate with the materials, concentrated as craftsmen. The discourses, engagements and fluid mutual influences between the materials and graphics embed modernity. Including Kamil Kocurek, many exhibited artists in the Biennial are considerably young, but their capability to fuse ideas and technical control stands out with absolute talent and intellectual depth.
